When getting a cold sore (which is a virus in you system) The best way to kill the virus is ICE. You hold an ice cube on your lip where you feel the cold sore is starting. (sorry) you have to do this off and on for a few hours) You will probably still get the cold sore, but it will only last 1 or 2 days, unstead of a week. This answer might be too late if you have a cold sore in FULL BLOOM now, this will only work when a cold sore is starting - but now you will know this for future use.

Abreva, expensive but works great. At the first signs of the cold sore apply it 5 times a day with a good amount that covers the area. Mine still lasted the usual 5 to six days but was barely visible. IT reduced the size and I had hardly no scab on it.

I don't know about cold sores; I get fever blisters. I've just discovered that Tea Tree Oil dries them up super fast (it smells kinda icky, but you can get it at WalMart in the vitamin section), and Lip Medex works nicely after it's dried up, and keeps it from cracking open when you laugh or eat.

Try zovirax. It is only available by prescription but it is well worth it. I haven't found anything over the counter that is even comparable. I use it the moment I feel the tingling in my lip and it usually only takes one or two applications and it doesn't normally come to the surface.

Lysine. You can use it topically, or ingest it in a supplement. It also works for shingles.
