Okay I'm trying to find a wet (canned) food for a new dog I just got. She is a Pit Mix and she is only about 1 month old. She has trouble with dry food even the little bites so I've been buying her Pedigree. The problem with it is that I don't like the way it makes her poop. It's very watery and messy. I feed my Chihuahua Cesar and I love the way it makes him go...it's always very solid but I would go broke if I bought a large breed Cesar food. haha. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what food would be good for solid, non watery poop?

So obviously the flavor is a factor...what's a good flavor?

gitemgang? what are you talking about weirdo?? If I haven't killed it?? Considering my husband rescued it from the streets and I have already invested a good deal of money and time into it...I hardly think that can be considered killing. Get a life.

For you people who don't know anything about the situation I would suggest just not even replying. If I have such a small puppy is because my husband rescued it and it's only an estimate by the vet that she is that old....rude people.

I guess that's where I'm going wrong. I will try the suggestions about trying to soften up the puppy dry food.

the problem isn't really the food, well it is, but it isn't.
I had the same problem with my dogs, because the people I bought them from fed them a diet of boiled chicken.
Switching foods with any dog is going to cause the runs for a while. It will eventually firm up, but it will take time..
Try to find a pupy food that is mostly chicken, I went through every brand there was with my aussie before I tried Authority brand.
To help "firm things up", mix in RICE even small peices of banana..
basically put your dog on the BRAT DIET.. well at least the first portion of the brat diet, Bananas and Rice will both help fill and firm.. :)

Stay away from the applesauce and toast, processed foods are not really good for dogs and most applesauce does contain sugar, a major doggie no no..

Yes, wet food is better. Of course there are good canned foods and less good canned foods, but they're still superior. There are also a handful of good dry foods, but most of them are crap. Many cats have done just fine eating dry food all their lives. It's not an instant death sentence or anything, although they're more likely to have weight problems and develop health issues later in life. My recommendation is to feed wet (canned or raw) only, but if there's a compelling reason for someone to feed dry food, then I recommend that they also feed some wet too - half and half at the very least.

Any change in diet will cause a change in bowl habits. Your pup is super young and loose bowls are to be expected when not feeding off the mother's milk. My old roomie raised a few litters and to ween the pups from the mom she would put a small amount of dry dog food in some water and let them soften into mush. The puppies wouldn't take immediate interest in it and only lap the loose water at first but after awhile they chowed down. Make sure you stick with puppy food.

Good luck.

I am assuming your pup is an orphan since it should not be away from it's mother until it is minimum 6 weeks old. A quality, ethical breeder would recommend the dog be a least 10-12 weeks old before you take it home.

A four week old puppy is not old enough to be away from mom and is not weaned yet. You'll need to supplement any food you give it with Esbilac puppy milk replacer. It may be that the pup could handle puppy hard food soaked in Esbilac until soft. Any canned food you give should be intended for unweaned pups. You can get recommendations from your vet.

After the pup is weaned onto solid food, you should never feed it canned food. Canned food is not as nutritious (even Ceasar) and does nothing to help prevent tooth decay as solid hard food will.

And any canned food will give loose stools especially if the puppy is too young to be entirely relying on solid food for its life.

If this puppy was not an orphan and you foolishly took it from its mom too young, you would do best to give it back to the idiot who sold it to you. Go back and take it home again after two more weeks at least. It is best for the health of the pup to let it be weaned from it's mother before you take it home.

Stay away from lower quality foods (dry or wet) such as Pedigree, IAMS/Eukanuba, Science Diet, Purina Dog Chow...look for good qaulity foods with good ingredients..foods such as Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Canidae, Natural Balance, California Natural, Blue Buffalo, Fromm,Solid Gold.... they all make good quality puppy foods in wet and dry.

Have you tried putting water or puppy formula on the food to make it a bit softer? Are you feeding the dog puppy food? Canned food is not very healthy for dogs because it's very fatty and also not good for dental health.

Why exactly do you have a 1 month ago puppy, anyway? This dog should still be with it's mother.

Just get a good quality of puppy dry food, and pour boiling water over it, and it will soon mush up, so she can eat it..Much better for the pup..I really like Canidae, but any of them at the pet supply shop will do..Never the ones at the grocer's..they don't save you any money..really
If you continue to have poop problems, just add a spoon of plain yogurt to any food, to aid in digestion..Be sure to get the puppy de-wormed..it needs done at 3 weeks old, and every 3 weeks..

Are you sure your feeding him puppy food? That may have something to do with why his excrement is watery. My suggestion is to use Alpo dog food, (or in your case, puppy food). The best flavor to get for a dog is Lamb & Rice, it is very healthy for them and will make their coat nice. They obvioulsy have other flavors but I only feed my dogs Lamb and Rice. Hope this helps!

I have a good recipe for getting you Pit mix started on dry food.

1 can of Carnation Evaporated Milk
1 can of water (refill the Carnation can w/ water)
1 teaspoon of Caro Syrup
Dry food of your choice (puppy)

Mix the Evaporated Milk, water and caro syrup well (in a jug of some type) and pour over dry food(enough to cover food). Let soak for 10-15 minutes in room temperature. Serve.

*****Notice: May cause weight gain!!! Ween your puppy off this gradually when you want them to start eating dry food
