Sleep is an essential part of life without which the body would fail to function properly.Sleep allows the body to make up for the loss of inherent strength. The muscular and nervous system need rest most of all.The body gets oxygen without physical work and stimuli. The chemicals in the brain secreted as a result of various reactions during waking hours are destroyed and this brings about serenity and enables one to forget the incidents that have been disturbing and traumatic.During sleep the short term memory gets converted into long term so that what you read becomes stored for longer period.
There are a number of physiological changes that can be monitored during sleep. For example, electroencephalogram would enable one to know the wave patterns; the heart beat, rate of respiration, etc change a little bit during sleep.Fatigue is removed as lactic acid of muscles is changed to glucose in the liver(Cori cycle).
