I have been taking SNRI's for several years. They effectively treat my chronic depression and I would be reluctant to do without them. However, they effectively eliminate my sex drive. Has anyone been treated for this problem and how?

I agree with switching anti-depressant but, also maybe you could try coming off, slowly, like over a years time. While doing this increase your therapy and your involvement in activities and socializing. Keeping your mind off of the returning depression could keep it from returning. If you've been on the same SNRI for years it may not be working as well. You will have to commit to several lifestyle changes (I can't say exactly what since I don't know your lifestyle) Good Luck!

I have some graduate-level studies in psychopharmacology, and 10 years of personal experience having taken nearly every anti-depressant on the market. Others have suggested that changing to another med could be of help. I would agree that you may want to talk to your doc about this as an option. But, if you find that your current med is working well otherwise, talk with your doc about adding a dietary supplement called "ginko biloba". It is widely available. I don't understand its action, but my Psychiatrist suggested that I try this over the counter supplement and I found it to be very helpful. You should expect to see improvement within 2-4 weeks. If I remember correctly, he said to take more than was typically suggested on the packaging, but try looking for info on this on the web. Good luck with this, it can be a challenge when dealing with may psycho-active drugs. I would suggest that you run this by the doc before hand to make certain that there are no interactions between the drug you're using and ginko biloba. Many people are unaware of the significant and serious complications that can arise when psycho-active drugs are mixed with over-the-counter dietary supplements--so please speak with the doc before trying this.

You are on a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Depression may cause a loss of libido and every available treatment may cause this as well. Thus - 1st you must decide whether it was the depression or the pill. If it is the pill speak with your doctor about changing the dose or changing to another medication. Just because 1 SSRI causes a loss of libido other SSRIs may not. In addition there are entirely different classes of anti depressants.

NARI's (noradrenergic reuptake inhibitors), SSRI's (selective serotonine reuptake inhibitors) and SNRI's (selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) play hell on libidinal issues. for men the side effects are low libido or ED, for women they often precipitate low libido. The best method is to reduce the number of medication through behavioral and psychological therapies rather then "got the blues, take a pill".

Drugs such as zoloft, paxil, prozac, wellbutrin act differently in each person and there is no clear delineation between which one will produce the least side effects in any given person until they are on it for some time.

Americans are vastly over prescribed with psychiatric medications. Get off the meds, and get into see the counselor. Physical activity does more to eleviate depression then any medication can.

Take a walk daily, take your dog with you. The presence of a loyal companion does more to elevate blood levels of critical neurotransmitters then you'd believe.

I've had the same problem with Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro and Effexor...each one helped significantly with the depression but the libido loss eventually made me discontinue each one. I have had no problem with Wellbutrin alone (which I have been on for about 8 years). It has a very low risk of sexual side effects. They sometimes add Wellbutrin to help counter this side effect of an SSRI or other anti-d that's causing it, but it did not work for me. Every time we would add one of the above mentioned meds, I had sexual side effects. (Lexapro and Effexor caused the most problems for me.)

the decrease in your libido is just a side effect of the medication. go to the website of whatever medication you are taking. you can read there that a lot of people suffer from this side effect. unfortunately there is no cure for this problem. although with a little help from your sexual partner you will be able to become aroused and be able to have a normal sex life. the person who said viagra would help is incorrect. viagra is no a libido enhancing medication. it is for erectile disfunction which is completely different.

Erectile Dysfunction can be devastating to men, and unfortunately, millions of men suffer from the condition. Learn how to cure erectile dysfunction https://tr.im/GNY6k

If you go to the doctor to talk about the issue, you’re likely to get put on one or more of the popular medications used to treat the condition. While they can be effective (temporarily), these medications come with a raft of side effects, some of which are decidedly unpleasant. Even worse, these medications aren’t really a cure, they’re more like a temporary workaround.

Worst of all, they tend to be really expensive. Month after month, you’re having to pay to work around your condition. That’s what the Big Pharmaceutical companies want.
