They will say, jsut think about the poor people in third world countries, the thing is though, that is irrelevent, becuase that would be saying that money buys happiness

I lived in a third world country for a year after college, and ironically I was never happier in my life than while i WAS there
the people seemed happier and more relaxed on a whole too,,ironically

then i came back home and after a few months I went back into a bad depression

but another thing is there is a misconception thst people in these countries are too strong willed to be depressed, while I was there I met these two old guys,,one an alcoholic who sufferd from depression and where cared for by all the relatives and never looked down on, they took his coindition seriously and were very compassionate towards him, they didn't look at it as a character flaw

just some food for thought about misconceptions on mental ilness

Chances are it's because they either don't truly understand what depression is ~yes it IS different than just having the "blues"~ or b/c they have a bit of a stigma towards mental illness and are afraid of "catching" something themselves. People often belittle the things they fear the most. True clinical depression can't be prevented, though it can be treated, and for some people it's easier for them to believe that other people are simply selfish as opposed to suffering from a disease that they themselves might develop.

Depression isn't something a person can control; it's a chemical imbalance and it can be very debilitating. I agree with you; every country has people with depressive behavior and some are more sympathetic than others. As for yourself, please get a counselor/therapist and get on some medication. It would do you a world of good and then you could help others understand and cope with the same problem no matter where you are. You sound like a strong person and you know your problem; now is the time to do something for yourself. Others will thank you for it. Godloveya.

People suffering from depression do not always tell people that they are depress.
I understand that you have meet people whose relatives are compassionate but in the United States depression is something people work out on there own or with close family.

Most older people (over 35) do not undersand the pressure that is put on us younger people by society, work, schooling, even finding good jobs after college.
Go to your doctor, they will find a medician and a doctor that will help you over come your depression.
If your depression is so server that you are not able to work or go to school, you need help right away. Most people feel depression and find that a hobby (swimming, biking) will help. You are not alone. People like you are depress are everywhere, they just do not express that fact to others. Sometimes you just have to work and move on in your life

It pissed me off that people seem to think depression is optional. I have heard new mothers who did not suffer from postpartum depression say "I was so busy I did not have time to be depressed" NO ONE MAKES TIME TO BE DEPRESSED ON PURPOSE. True depression is not optional. I suppose trying to keep a positive attitude is optional to someone who does not have clinical depression. Clinical depression can sneak up on anyone. Happy people can be trucking along just fine in life and suddenly have a bout of depression for seemingly no reason. This is because it is a physical, chemical imbalance of the body. After I had my baby I could not seem to convince people that something was very wrong with me. People that have not been in the depths of true depression just do not understand what it feels like. The word depression is taken out of context when it comes to true chemical depression. They really should come up with a better name for it to take the stigma away.

I agree. I am told the same thing. I think people do not understand that depression is an illness, not a choice.

people generally attach pity and attention with depression. depression doesn`t really seem to exist anymore. if you look at movies and t.v. the person just wants attention. tons and tons of pictures are of depressed people. and so it just seems unreal now. it`s just something that you see on t.v. and in photos. and ii agree that people don`t seem to understand that it`s not a choice. ii hope you feel better !!
