I took her to the vet a while back and he said she had hay fever. He gave me Malotic to apply to her neck and that cured it for awhile but now she's re-opened the raw spot. Any suggestions?

Hi -

I would recommend checking her ears and skin to see if she has any signs of fleas, mites or ticks.

Check for droppings from the fleas on her skin. Fleas especially like to jump on our 4 legged friends to stay warm in the cold weather.

Using a soft, moist cloth rub your finger on the inside of her ear. If you get a bunch of dirt that comes out her ears might be the problem. It could be infection or mites.

There are lots of over the counter products you can use to help you with any of these problems at the Pet Store. Depending on whether you want to go with natural or conventional therapies would be the next thing to consider.

If it's from allergies than changing her diet. You could try Pet Guard Canned Cat food which offers high quality protein and no allergen preservatives and as an anti-histamine Natural Animal Ester-C

Malotic treats bacterial, fungal and yeast disease and as you know, you'll need a prescription. It's main ingredients are Gentomycin Beta-Methasone-Chlortrimazole. I would think you might find a similar over the counter product at the drug store in the section with fungus aids or ask the pharmacist.

Hope this helps

It doesn't make sense to me that an allergy would cause a problem in just one spot.

My internet search brought up information that malotic is used for infections in dog's ears - both bacterial and fungal. Have these been ruled out?

If it is NOT a fungus or infection, calendula gel is safe to use on cats. It is soothing and will close up a raw spot (you wouldn't want to seal fungus or infection inside her body).

You can purchase the gel at a health food store. I want to stress that you should not use it if there is an infection or fungus.

She could have allergies. Maybe you should take her back to the vet and try to pinpoint what it could be. My grandpa's dog had to be put on a special diet b/c of some allergy he had. When he wasn't on the special food he would scratch his leg raw.

Also the cat could be suffering from separation anxiety. Do you leave him home alone alot? He could be taking out his anxieties by scratching himself.

Ewwww....poor kitty!

She might need to have one of those Elizabethan collars put onto her so that she can't scratch the wound while it's healing; but in the meantime, call your vet and see what he suggests. There may be another med which can help.
