I have someone moving to Texas from Canada. They are driving down from Canada in their personal automobile and will cross the border...they have 12-15 bottles of wine they want to bring. I know they will be charged based off the percentage of alc. My question is, is there a limit on how many bottles they can bring with them?

Thank you!

After his exemption (1 liter) he can be charged duty. The duty is not not based on alc. % but on volume -- but the American duty on wine is so little (less than a few dollars total for 15 bottles) US Customs may well choose to avoid the paperwork and not charge him AS LONG AS HE DECLARES IT ALL! (I've brought in from Europe as much as 1 1/2 cases and not been charged).

India is very much wrong that hassles will be avoided if he ships his wine to a friend (and the shipping co. is sure to charge the duty, plus Texas taxes, plus all the shipping costs). Your friend will have no hassle at the border as long as he properly declares his wine (but any delicious and inexpensive Alberta beef rib steaks are still not permitted and will be confiscated!).

By the way, where in Canada does your friend live? Tell him to stock up there as he can on the wonderful wines from B.C's Okanagan Valley because he is not going to find many, if any, south of the border, and if he does they are apt to be incredibly expensive.

Usually the limit is based on presumed personal consumption - if it is perceived that the wines are for resale it can really cost your friend. Avoid the hassle have them ship the wine to a friend who already lives there. That way they avoid the border stuff. Good Luck!
