tail docking should be done within a week after birth, by a vet.
our doberman puppy and her litter mates all had theirs done when they were 3 days old. the breeder has a license to breed dobermans and has been doing so for many years, they are all kc and insured, parents are of great bloodlines, (and also the most stunning dobermans I've ever seen!) and puppies are all wormed and vaccinated up to date.
it's painless, and only a vet should do it.
it is not cruel, but is a cosmetic option, as is dewclaw removing and ear clipping, so not many vets will be willing to do it.
don't let people tel you it's cruel, or a thing about vanity, our little pup only had her tail docked, that was all we and the breeder wanted.

to all the people who are saying "oh how would you like it if.....BLA BLA BLA", GO AND GET YOURSELF ANOTHER ***** CAT!!!
They are only attacking you because they don't understand. they shoud go and bleat at the people who are choosing to dock tails themselves rather than let a vet do it, THAT is cruel

oh and it's not illegal in the uk, only some areas won't do it.
i live in yorkshire.

Tail docking originated with dogs that were used for hunting and fighting, as such violent activities could result in a dog's tail getting snagged and broken in the underbrush or grabbed by an opponent. Nowadays it's done purely for aesthetic reasons and for conforming to official breed standards. I would say that at this point it's just cruel and unnecessary and the practice should be done away with. How would you like it if somebody came along and lopped off part of your body just because he thought it looked cute? A dog's tail also seems to help with it's balance as it's running, so nobody's doing it any favors by removing it.

Most people when docking pups tails have it done in three to five days after the puppy is born. Here in the states you need to take it to a vet who will most likley charge about 25 for the firstpup and 5 for every pup after. However theolder they get the more it will cost as it then becomes a surgery issue. I had a 3year old show boxers done and it cost about 150.

You don't. It is illegal for anyone but a vet to do it and most vets won't do it. As from now it is illegal anyway because of the new animal welfare bill. Most enlightened people will not buy a pup if it's had it's tail cut off in any case.

If it is done it is done within 5 days from birth you vet will be able to do them without it hurting the puppies. The nerves haven't developed in the tail yet. Some vets do it after they are 4 months old, but most consider it cruel and in fact an amputation. It is very painful for the puppy at that point. If it hasn't been done when they are a few days old, then don't do it.

I don't condone the docking of tails in any shape or form apart for medical reasons. I can understand that the image of a rot, in everyones mind, has no tail but is it really needed?

If you really feel the need to do it then talk to you vets. And for the sake of your dog DO NOT try it yourself or get the bloke down the pub to do it... Otherwise that is just pure cruelty

YOU DONT. A vet from the Council of Docked Breeds will come and do the litter at 3 days.

HMMM maybe you should have your leg or arm cut off first to see how it feels before you do it to the dog. Or better still maybe you should be banned from keeping any animals at all. If you wanted a pet without a tail maybe you should get a spider or a snake or something.

You have it done properly, by a vet that's experienced in the procedure. Not all vets know the proper tail length for each breed.

Ask the rottie breeders in your area for a recommendation

Dogs come with tails for a reason, they use them to communicate and besides that's the end of their spinal column, not just a fashion accesory! Most vets refuse to dock tails and ears now. How would you like someone to cut off the end of your nose or your ears just for fashion??? Or the nose/ears of your kids?
Please don't do this!!
