I am a college student strapped for cash. I am looking for an inexpensive intermediate deer rifle. I have looked at both of these guns for under $300, however the 710 does come with an inexpensive scope. I was wondering which one was the better firearm, and if i should buy the 270 or the 30-06?

Bound's hubby here:

I have had issues with Mossberg Firearms. I am an avid fan of Remington's. Personally, I am not particularly fond of the Model 710, but if it's all you can afford then it's the best game in town! Now, if you want to spend your money wisely you should be able to find a good used Remington 700 or Winchester Model 70 for under $300. You could get a good Weaver scope (K4 or K6) for about $50. You will get a better hunting rig this way.

Now, concerning caliber... the .270 can be used on most North American game, except the larger bears, if you place your shot right. The .30-06 is good for all North American game. For deer hunting, as you desire, either is a good caliber choice. The .30-06 may recoil a little bit more.

Good luck.

I also recommende both, but suggest the 710 more because , I have good experience with Remington. I would recommend the .30/06 because you can do more with it and it is a good all around caliber.

I also would recommend a Remington 700 or Winchester 70 as you can find good used ones. For me they seem to kick less than the 710, I also like wood stocks and like to mount my own scope. Deals can be had on scopes for 50 bucks and you can always save up money for a better scope.

The .270 is a great caliber and my second choice, it has flatter shooting trajectory making antelope a easier task, although if you practice with the 06 you will know its drop and it will do fine. With both calibers you should do a lot of practice. In AZ there is alot of long range shots so I have shot both these calibers. My dad got the 710 because he liked it and wanted a cheap .270. He has an 06 and sticks with it, it is a winchester 70.

I have had good luck with mossberg before, my dad has a .30-30 lever gun from them, he bought a long long time ago and now it is my gun and I love it. He gave it to me a long time ago and it still is my backup and you can get good shots in 150 yards, especially when my old legs feel like walking. But, I have only had one newer rifle from them excluding shotguns and it is a good gun. The remington 700 guns and winchester 70 are both good guns that you could accesorize later on and the 700 is a basis for the 7.62 sniper rifles in the military and on many police forces. The 710 is nice but, I know it is a good action, I just like to stay with the old proven ones. Hopefully my old two sense helps you out a bit.

Got both and like both equally. But if Remington 710 comes with scope get it. That's the one I bought my son-in-law for Christmas because of the scope.
As for Caliber. 270 is real good for deer and elk, up to and including black bear: It was the orginal wildcat load: A 30-06 necked down from 30 caliber to 27 caliber.
30-06: You have a wider chose of loads than with a 270:
With a 30-06 you can go all the way up to a 226 grain load which with a good 03 Springfield sniper rifle will take down an Asian Elephant. Been there done that! Got Royal a***s eating for that.

I agree with above if the Remington comes with a scope get it. As far as witch gun is better a Remington or a mossberg it is pretty much a toss up between the two. also i hunt with a .270 and i love it it is not overkill by any means but when you hit a deer it knows it. has good stopping power, i myself am not a big fan of the 30-06, but that is just a personal preference. happy hunting

Hey it is simple as this. Either shotgun will do it's job. I have seen that. As for either one being better, well one guy already hit it on the head with the military test fact (yes the military uses the mossbergs). So I mean that says something, but I would take either or (I do tend to like the mossbergs that I have seen) but you know how it is, debates can go on forever (i.e. 9mm vs 45 vs 40 etc.) Everyone has their preferences I guess, and just turn around and make to big issue out of it. What works for you may not work for the next guy so I don't think there is no 'best.'

I personally own a Remington 270 and could not be happier with the performance and accuracy I have always had with it. It has brought down everything I have shot with it. On the other hand, if you are going to shoot somehting larger in the future, like elk or moose, you may want to go with the larger caliber 30-06. As far as the optics go, my opinion is to never skimp on them. Always try to get the best quality scope you can afford, it will make come in handy in the long run.

I just bought the mossberg 100ATR for 399.99 on sale it came with a scope mounted from the factory in the 270 caliber for my virgin shoulders.I thought it was a small caliber since this is my first deer rifle ever. It's not just the slug itself almost three inch tall casing full of powder kick like a horse. The remington 710 is also a very fine choice and comes with a bushnell scope for 399.99 on sale. This model is a knock down version of the 700.So all in all personal choice, try one a friend has see if you like his or hers.

Remington is a better quality gun than a Mossberg. I happen to own a Mossberg, but I only use it one season out of the year. The majority of the guns I own are Remingtons.
