it was working fine, then it's just started playing up. I've not added any new hardware, not fiddled with any settings. I've even done a full clean format (XP Disk), updated all the drivers and XP/Office updates ......... I just dont know what it could be. System is new'ish, clean and has no errors/conflicts showing. HDD is showing no errors. Motherboard, graphics card, sound card, RAM, etc are only about 18mths old.

Any ideas?

Its definately not a virus/adware.

Nothings been fiddled with.

Overheating now that might be an option. Although i do have a twin fan and a triple fan on the power supply. Even still it might be just that.

Memory stick problems, maybe, although i'd expect that to show-up as a fault. Then again maybe not.

OK, i stripped out, cleaned out and put back together the whole thing today. So there isnt a spec of dust within 2 ft of the case.

I've installed three 'in line' fans at the front to expel air and one additional 8cm turbo intake fan at the rear. This combine with the 8cm intake fan at the front should keep things cool.

I've swapped (on loan) the two DDR strips.

I've checked the processor fan & conductive gell; both ok.

All drivers have been checked (again); there is no virus and the PC is almost devoid of software (XP, Office, Norton 07 and a few bits and bobs for the printer, router/hub, etc.

I can get a max of 3 hours, but an average of 45-90 mins before everything locks up.

Application or memory usage does not effect it, and it reboots as if nothing was wrong.

I'm totally at a loss as to what this could be.

VIRUS

possibilities : (I have had the same prob many times)

Your PC is overheating. This is not good as mine kept cutting out every 30 mins or so. I left it and my motherboard went dead. It totally fried. It was in the summer though.

Could be a virus - get it sorted now before it is too late. Otherwise you will have to format your hard drive. (hope you have got your stuff on back up.)

could be something simple like hardware not installed prop or maybe you have tampered with the settings on your hardware too much. Or overclocked stuff too much.

Thats about it but unless it is summer where you live or you live in a sauna sounds like a virus.

It doesn't matter how many fans you have, if they're clogged with dust they'll overheat!
Unplug it, wash your hands and earth yourself.Take off the side panel and get in there with a can of compressed air. Only use very short bursts or you'll freeze it and damage it.
Get the hoover and hoover the air holes on the side of the case (with the nozzle of a cylinder vac).
Houses are dustier than offices so do this regularly.

I recently had a similar problem a few weeks ago and I tried everything. The problem turned out to be a faulty memory stick which had been bought only a few months before I started having problems. Try taking one stick of memory out and running it for a couple of hours to see if it crashes and if it does try taking another different memory stick out and repeating the process.

Lots and lots of possible reasons, however if you've done a complete reinstall and wiped the harddrive you should be able to rule out software problems (and therefore adware and viruses too).

Hardware are harder to diagnose though, problems with motherboard, hdd or memory are most likely to make your unit crash for no apparent reason though.

Before you rule out a software problem do a full re-install of the OS but do NOT re-install Norton. The forums are FULL of complaints similar to yours by people who have installed Norton 2007.

what about the processor fan, do you know if it is working, if you wiped out your drive then I would rule out virus or spyware, check on your CPU fan, it will cause the computer to restart when it starts to over heat,

Try scanning for viruses. The online scanner from trendmicro is quite good. Try it out.
