New York City has five boroughs (it's also spelled Boro - but never "burrough")

They are:

Manhattan (also known as "New York County")

Brooklyn (also known as "Kings County")

Queens (aka "Queens County")

The Bronx (aka "Bronx County")

and

Staten Island (aka "Richmond County")

All of the 5 boroughs of New York City are also counties of the State of New York, just 3 of them have official county names that are different than their borough names.

New York City is at the bottom of the State and it borders New Jersey. Therefore their are no boroughs west of New York City - that is all New Jersey. The five boroughs are Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island. Manhattan is a 12 by 2 mile Island. It is where all the big buildings are, and where you find the major museums, time square, Broadway, wall street and many other attractions. The other 4 boroughs are busy, heavily urbanized places, but they just are not as built up as Manhattan. They have some museums and cultural attractions and areas of heavy industry and thousands of shops. Many people live in the boroughs, but work in Manhattan - it is cheaper to live in the outer boroughs. Queens and Brooklyn are very similar to each other. The are each at the western tip of Long Island, Queens to the north and Brooklyn to the South. The Bronx is a peninsula of land attached to the mainland. Staten Island is way South, it is an Island Just across from New Jersey. Each borough has several neighborhoods and they are highly concentrated with people. You could be in one area, walk a few blocks and then be in another neighborhood. It will look and feel different.

The city has 5 sections called burroughs. These are Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx & Staten Island.
Bronx = only burrough on the United States mainland.
The others are on islands.
Brooklyn & Queen occupy the western end of Long Island.
Water surrounds Staten Island & Manhattan. These burroughs face each other across New York Harbor.
