Hi I have been giving blood this year and was thinking about donating bone marrow. It seems alot more complicated than blood donation. how was your experience?

Most people who register as bone marrow donors never get called as they don't provide a near enough match to anyone who needs one.

Registering though is easy (certainly in the UK). Next time you give blood, just tell them you want to join the register. They'll give you all the forms and just take an extra tube of blood for typing.

From all accounts (I've never been called so I'm relying on second hand info for this), donating isn't the most comfortable thing in the world and you tend to be a little stiff for a few days after, but compare that to what the recipient is going through and it kind of puts it into context. It's nowhere near as bad as having leukaemia, aplastic anaemia etc.

You don't just go and make a bone marrow donation. Usually you donate if your blood type etc. fits to the DNA of somebody who needs a marrow transplant because of leukemia etc. You can get yourself registered in a bone marrow database. For that you only have to donate blood and get the DNA checked etc.
If your DNA fits for a person with cancer, only then will you donate.

The procedure does hurt (but not very much) and you will be in the hospital for a short while. But I think it is worth maybe saving somebody else's life!

My parents donated bone Marrow a long time ago when I was quiet young.

I don't remeber that much about it but my Dad did say it took longer and hurt more than he expexted.

That said he got over it pretty quick and had no long lasting effects.

I had some bone marrow taken to confirm that i had lymphatic leukaemia it was extremely uncomfortable and painful but as they had to take quiet a few samples perhaps a single donation is different.
