As the others have already said, you can use IE to download and install and then start using Firefox again.
You may also consider changing your browser for IE7. I have been using it for a little bit now! It has all of the best bits of Firefox and non of the downsides. If you have a go, you will feel at home with it within seconds. (Almost perfect copy of Firefox!)
I uninstalled Firefox about a week after installing IE7.

We need more information.
This question doesn't make sense.
My WAG is that you are running some web application only compatible w/ IE. Using IE once will not automatically make it your default browser unless you instruct it to - which is not nessecary.

To continue on my wild *** guess, in firefox, click tools, options, the general tab.... There is a box that says "check that firefox is my default browser" if this is checked - everytime you open firefox it will prompt you to set it as the default program.

I dont see how this is relevant to anything but it does address specifically your question.

Download it with IE or some other browser, install the app., and switch back to firefox.

You do need to keep some version of IE on your computer if only to download updates from microsoft and other vendors. As you found, some sites only allow you to download using specific browsers.

Assuming then that you're using Windows, just open the start menu, and select Internet Explorer from there. This will open IE, but will not change your default settings from Firefox.

Once you're done on that site, close IE, and continue as you were.

Just use your Internet Explorer... You will be asked if you want to use this as your default ... just say no.
