Unix was created at Bell Labs by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie in 1969 as a muti user server based operating system, it has evolved and improved since then, Linux is but one of many Unix variants.

Linux is a good variant of Unix for beginners, also FreeBSD is good as well, and don't overlook OSX, the operating system used by Apple Macintosh.

Try out a few Linux live CD's, they are Linux distributions that run off of a CD ROM, you can get a feel for Linux without installing it on your computer, many are available here:

Linux GUI is a bit more friendly to the new user. Unix is more expensive, and made for business and professional use.
