Can the ownership papers of a car legally be in a minors name? I'm 17 and trying to purchase a car with my own money, and I dont want my parents to have any kind of legal claim on it. What about insurance for the car? Can a minor get insurance without their parent?

The answer to this question all depends on the state in which you reside.

I did a search for your question and the state of Ohio will allow a minor to obtain and titlae and registration only after the parents have signed a "consent form."

A consent form is not the same as the "cosigning" that some other users have told you about. Consent merely states that you have their persmission to make the purchase since you are in fact a minor.

Truly, since we don't have information about the state or the county in which you live, the best course of action for you would be for you to call your local tax office and tell them of your delimma. They will be able to inform you as to what your rights and limitations are.

Good Luck and Happy Thanksgiving.

The basic answer to all of your questions is: It depends on the laws of your state. There shouldn't be any problem owning a car at age 17, but if you're talking about getting it financed then you may not be able to do it -- many states require you to be 18 to enter into any type of contract (including a vehicle loan or lease). And there shouldn't be any law against getting your own insurance, but it's going to be VERY expensive because the highest risk group for drivers is from age 16 to age 21. If you can, you're really better off getting on your parents' plan for auto insurance because it'll cost you a heck of a lot less.

Years ago, when I turned 16 I got my permit and then my drivers license shortly thereafter. My parents bought me a car for my 16th birthday (yeah, yeah, I know, rich kid LOL). But they carried the title and insurance until I turned 18 and then deeded everything to me.

I have no idea if the laws are still the same, but back in "my day" a minor couldn't legally enter into a contract.

If you are paying cash, I suppose you can. A minor can't enter into a financial legal agreement, but if you pay cash, probably. Check with your agent regarding insurance, it would be much cheaper to go through your parents insurance. And since your parents are responsible for you and your actions until you are 18, even if it's in your name they can legally keep you from driving it.

Though you can be listed as the primary owner and driver of the car for title and insurance, since you are under 18 you will have to have your parents cosign the papers.

No, you have to be an adult to enter into a legally binding contract.
