In roughly 2% of the population, yes. Everyone else just uses that as an excuse for being fat.

What it boils down to is dedication. Do you desire it enough to fight years of bad habits? Metabolism can be revved up by eating 6 small (healthy) meals a day. Actually, I eat closer to 8 (smaller meals than if i was eating 6, obviously).

We learn our habits from our parents/the people who raise us, so although it's not generally a genetic trait, obesity is passed down through generations in terms of how we educate our youth to eat and exercise. If you grow up eating fatty fried foods and without much exercise, it's likely that your care givers were overweight, and, if you don't pay attention to breaking those habits, you will be too.

Obesity can be related to your genes. Depending on your family history you can have an increased risk of either excess adipose hyperplasia (growth of new fat cells) or excess adipose hypertrophy (growth in size of fat cells). Don't go an blame your family history just yet though...it is more likely that lifestyle-poor diet and lack of physical activity-are the major contributors to obesity.

kids learn to eat from their parents- if you teach your kids to eat all the fattening crap that made you fat- they will in turn get fat and teach their kids to eat fattening stuff too!
