In the state of California, every vehicle must carry proof of financial responsibility - usually via insurance. When a minor applies for a driver's license, the signature of that minor's parent or guardian on the application is a guarantee of the parent's provision of financial responsibility.

So, in other words, yes - in San Diego, your parents will need to add you to their insurance policy as a driver; when you applied for your driver's license, and they signed the form, they guaranteed that they would provide such coverage in accordance with state law.

Usually yes, but it depends on the insurance company. I have USAA and they cover anyone who drives my car (as long as they have my permission to drive it). Best way to find out is to call the insurance company and just ask -- you shouldn't have to give them a policy number or anything; they should know the answer to that question right off.
