The fee varies from state to state, but normally is about $50 for the first try, and $10 for re-tests.

You do not have to take any preparatory courses. However, there often are community education classes for a nominal cost and it certainly cannot hurt to get some freshening up.

Also, there are review books - "The GED For Dummies" is available from Amazon.Com for under $12. Some of the "for dummies" books are actually quite good - I can't tell you whether or not this one is.

On a personal note: I walked out of high school at the beginning of my senior year, took the GED, passed, and did just fine.

Good luck to you

Go to the Adult Learning Center in your area. They will tell you how to go about it. They offer classes that help you bone up on things you may have forgotten. They help you prepare for the exams. Hope this helps.

You have to pay to take the GED. If you fail, you have to pay again to take it again. It is in your best interest to take a class for GED prep. You'll waste less time and money.

In Illinois where I live, it is not required.
