Jezz88 is onto something. I believe these patterns are referred to as finger knitting (could be wrong). Different hand symbols/signals are used for different things such as healing, protection, etc. Whether or not you believe it does anything or makes any sense is for you to decide. Remember that beliefs, particularly ones from a foreign country (in this case, Japan) are sometimes hard for modern "civilized" man to understand.

Nah man they don't make any symbols, If in fact you're referring to Naruto, that's just the Japanese Anime and how they artistically express what is happening for the viewer.

if it is in fact a symbol, it's prob'ly the Kanji (much like the letters in the alphabet if you will, usually it's a character used for a sound or part of a word, like in Karate; there is two Kanji one for Kara meaning open, and Te meaning hand) meaning that it might be a word for whatever "spell" or "technique" that the character on the show is using.

there's no realism for backing this kind of stuff you see in Anime, so you shouldn't get it confused with things in reality because it's a special effect for the show.

and hood geez man lighten yourself up guy, she's prob'ly still in high school or somethin, or maybe she's an animation buff like myself. I love Japanese animation, but it seems to be too esoteric to me sometimes

Well, ninjas (which I don't consider them real) never make those hand movements in real life. But, that idiot who posted first is just being rude. No, they don't do that, but on Naruto they do it to focus their energy then attack. It's just some fake symbol thing they do.
