No, you would not have to be smug if you were an athiest. There are plenty of athiests who are not smug.

However, recently, it seems as if there is a movement where athiest's are stating that it is not correct to believe in science and still have faith. In fact, that it is not alright to even respect those who believe in god.

I have listed an article from wired about it.

I'm not smug, but I am sarcastic... and anyone with a sense of humor and an IQ doesn't seem to have a problem with that. Any personality trait I may have that IS disagreeable must be the fault of Christianity, though... since I was a Christian for 20 years and until just six months ago, and I'm the same person now as I was then, I'd say that must have much more to do with it than atheism does. Have a nice day.

No you do not have to be smug and some christians sometimes get annoyed when an atheist is near because they feel offended, not becaues the atheist did something. this is not true all the time mind you,. only sometimes.
You could just be an ordinary person and be an atheist-no smugness,or anger.
Hope this helped and have a nice day.
P.S.
i hope i didn't offend anyone today. If so, i really didn't mean to and please forgive me.

Well, I'm probably sometimes one of the smug ones but all atheism means is not believing in a God, there is NO necessity to be smug! Plus, many Buddhists don't believe in God, and the ones I know are rarely smug.

But, mate, EVERYONE is smug sometimes!

Oh come on you are plenty smug enough as it is. You don't need to be any more smug to be an atheist.
