I am following a recipe that calls for 3oz of dried chickpeas, but I only have cooked tinned ones and am not sure if 3oz will still be correct - I imagine they might weigh more...

They certainly do! The water retained in a canned "wet" garbanzo (chickpea) is 3-6 times the weight of a dried one.

Sadly, I don't know of an exact conversion, and can't help but wonder if the "cooked" business isn't going to impact your recipe as well?

If dried chickpeas are simply not available, you might try substituting a similar size-and-textured dried bean... perhaps a large lima?

Otherwise, I think I would work backwards. How many servings does the recipe make at the end? 4? 12? Estimate using 4 servings per 10-12 oz. can of wet beans.

Also, say a nice prayer, watch your liquid level and hold your breath.

Good luck!

They weigh a little more (due to water content) but with just 3oz needed it won't make that much difference.

Yes tinned ones weigh more than dry chick peas you have to soak dry ones

Either drain them and add in fresh water, or cook them in the liquid they are already in. You do NOT want to heat them dry, as they will burn. Whether you use the liquid they are in or not depends on how healthy you want them. Draining them and adding in fresh water is the healthier way. You CAN heat them in the microwave, very briefly. I'd say 20 seconds at a time, stirring in between. I recommend stove top, for ten minutes on low heat, covered, and stirring occasionally. You can eat them cold, too. But I prefer them slightly warmed, unless they are on a salad. My favorite way to eat chickpeas is mashed. I mash them up and add in spices like garlic or red pepper. Serve them with pita chips and you have your very own homemade hummus dip. :)

Yes, but only because of the difference of the water.

the cooked tinned ones are bound to weigh more with all that water, but I doubt it will matter too much.
