When you have a chance (she pauses or stops to take a drink, etc.), jump in and bring someone else into the conversation. Or, say "Excuse me, Susie may have something to say."

You didn't say how old you are. I say this because if you are older (21 or so), you could bring her aside and say very nicely that she may be monopolizing the conversation and not realize it. Does she live by herself? She may be lonely and want some attention.

We all know someone who monopolizes conversations. If your aunt is a nice person and not an aggressive sort, she may be able to take your comments in the spirit in which they are given.

Do you have any other relatives who can sort of do an "intervention?" Before the next family gathering, take her aside and kindly tell her to let someone else talk and listen carefully to what others are saying. She may learn something!

That is such a good question!! I have a sister-in-law who is also in love with the sound of her own voice. I can't wait to read some of the answers to this one. The only thing I can think of is either find something elso to do to take you out of the conversation or just put on the most bored expression you can. I always hate to call her on it because she is such a nice person, I don't want to permanently alienate her.

She might have a moderate to profound hearing loss. Elderly people with these type hearing loss often compensate for not being able to hear by talking. They are often unaware that they are doing so. Rather than telling her to "shut her yap," you may want to consider having her hearing checked.

I have a relative like that. You can say "Let someone else talk for awhile." without being mean about it. Just make a joke of it and don't say it out of anger or annoyance. Just say you want to know what someone else has to say. Say you want to know about uncle so and so's such and such. If she cuts you off hit her with a frying pan!

I leave the room. OR just act like i'm going to fall asleep to let them know that i'm tired of her conversation. I know people that talk all the time like that and its so annoying.

I know what you mean, and the whole time you keep thinking " respect my elders"
Just jump inwhenever you get the chance, and don't take a lot of breaths, so she can't cut you off.

How old is "older" and has she been like this all her life? If she hasn't been like this all her life maybe she should see a doc. My mother was like that in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease.
