They do get very, very small stipends. I'm not sure how it works out. Some are paid by call, possibly for mileage to and from drills, etc.

By very, very small, I'm talking $100 or less per year. They are volunteers, and are on-call basically out of the goodness of their hearts.

The OC had a volunteer program at one time, but due to Union politics they were shifted to a reserve program and eventually gotten rid of altogether. That's also why the OC went to a Fire Authority instead of a Fire department, yes there is a difference between the two.

Since this is a volunteer position, they work other jobs.
You can volunteer while working.

They volunteer. That means they are on call, risk family time, and their lives because they want to help their communities. No money - no health benefits - just all the smoke you can inhale.

I don't think so going by the word 'volunteer'- it's probably like volunteer coastguard boat people who do it as well as a day job.

I get paid 6 dollars for every call I go on. Just enough for the gas money.

Everyone in Orange County is too busy focusing on others; tanning, waxing, shopping, and working at soup kitchens.
