I know we can't just leave. its to late for that. as much as i'd like it. but what if we where to set up a base out somewhere in the desert. make it real secure 4or 5 cheek points just to get near the place , a training center for an army < that is iraqy> made up by a draft> of young men who must serve there nation. have a large refugee camp with weman and childern and people that need safty. cheek them for weapons before thay enter.so thay can't kill each outher. and send the new army out as there trained to take back there city's and bring our boys out as the new force takes control. it would cost money but hell we spent 100s of billions already. a lot of tents and food and water. suround the place with tanks and choppers and men ... maybe in a year we'd be out of there. what da yall think ? our people are getting killed potroling the citys and on roads. there fairly safe in camps.I know I'v spoken to some of them.

As much as I hate the war, and how much I beleive that we were dooped in all the information given to us about "why" we are over there. That would defeat the "purpose" on why Bush says we are over there. Because we are replacing the way their government governs, if we hand it back over to them right now in that fashon, they would run it the way they want to run it (which is the way it should be, but not the way Bush wants it). In turn, it would make the US look even stupider, because it wouldn't turn out the way Bush said it would.

What you have said the Iraqi Army should do is what the U.S. forces have done but Iraqis are not willing to go to that much effort and take so many risks. Plus, Iraqis are corrupt and they are loyal to their tribal and sectarial warlords more so then to the nation. We already know that the Iraqi police - under the current Shia government - act as death squads killing and horrorifically torturing Sunny Muslims. This is why we cannot pull out now. They must allow the country to break down and build itself back up again as it did in the begining - by letting them see how coming together serves their self interest. If they do not come together they are liable to be under attack from all sides, from Syria, Iran, Saudi and their economy will remain in ruin. Let their own interests bring them together, as is what brings all countries together and we will see a peaceful Iraq which lives up to its once great name.

I'm glad you're thinking about this situation. It's complicated for sure. The main issue seems to be recognition of combatants. Much as it was in Viet Nam. There already is a "Green Zone". An area heavily fortified where they are already doing what you are suggesting. They use it for warehousing, media barracks, command & control as well as transfer in & out of country. They conduct maintenance and training there.
