Acutally there are two rings every year. If you look at the cross secontion of a tree trunk you will see light and dark rings. The light rings are the spring wood and the dark rings are the fall wood. So every year there are two rings formed, Therefore to determine the tree's age you count either all of the dark rings or all of the light rings.

technically the rings represent climate changes and subsequent adapting by the tree.
this usually represents a warm season followed by a cold season. (A summer followed by a winter).
basically, the rings occur when the tree is hardened by the cold.
the rings do not necessarily represent a 365 day period of time.
