If wash my hair today, HONESTLY tomorrow I'll have terrible flakes again. It's been this way since I was a young girl & it's still happening at 21. I feel like I'm scrubbing really well and using good shampoos, but the problem remains. Not only flakes, but the type of dandruff that actually grows on your scalp. (Sounds disgusting, right?) I know it's about to get worse because of the dry winter months... any solutions/ tips will be appreciated. Tried Head n Shoulders... doesnt help & cant afford a drematologist.

omgsh! I know what you mean.!! trust me you're not the only one. I -- USED -- to have A LOT of dandruff!! But the best, easiest and AFFORDABLE solution, is simple! White Vinegar!! It TRULY DOES WORK!! It works like a charm . soak your hair into it , make sure its on ur scalp. Let it sit in for 30 - 45 mins. and then wash. and it WORKS!! You'll probably still have dandruff, but MUCH MUCH less. continue using it, and i GUARANTEE your dandruff will be GONE!! Do it about once a week, and in no time, you'll forget that you even had any. * theres only one downside to it though; it smells horrible!! but once you wash it out with shampoo it'll go away, but for those 30-45mins its gnna stink!! and i suggest you wear an old t-shirt, because you wont want any of your nice clothes to smell =P.

-- i hope it helps!!!

You cannot disgust me because I have had psoriasis for 20 years now. Mine also started in the scalp and I ended up with bleeding and scabs and ever-present flakes.

You say you cannot afford a dermatologist. I think that must mean you cannot afford to talk to your primary physician about it either, or afford prescriptions.

If that is the case, you need to try the various shampoos available for dandruff, seborrhea, and psoriasis (which I suspect you have). Some people do well with shampoos that contain tar, which one of the Head and Shoulders has but I suggest you look for shampoos that have a higher concentration, such as T-Gel. If that does not work, you might try the shampoos that have salicylic acid in them, such as T-Sal. You may need to try several to find something that works.

I hate to be negative, but none of these ever worked for me. My body was 85% covered with psoriasis and so I was put on one of the new injectable biologic medicines (which cost a fortune if you are not insured), and am mostly clear, but I still do not wear black shirts -- EVER !! My scalp is 90% clear, but still flakes.

I wish you luck and hope you can soon see someone in the medical field and get more help than this.

Okay, first of all, STOP using those grocery store products. You will only irritate your scalp a million times more! I understand you can't afford a dermatologist or perscriptions, so I'm going to suggest a product that should work for you.

It's called Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo and Conditioner. (See here: http://www.paulmitchell.com/site/subpage.asp?section=2,10,32 ) Compared to a perscription, it is not very expensive. Probably the cheapest place you will find it is at a SuperCuts. And keep your eye out because sometimes they run buy one get one free or 50% off deals, and then you can stock up. Trust me though, it is worth the money.

Start out using the Tea Tree about twice a week. If you are still experiencing a lot of dandruff, step it up to 3 times a week. Don't be afraid to let the conditioner sit on your scalp for several minutes as well. It is going to tingle, but it will feel really good! In between uses, just use a nice moisturizing shampoo and conditioner (Of course I would recommend you buy professional products, but if you can't afford one, buy Tresemme products, they're the best non professional products you can get)

I always suggest these products for my clients with dandruff and psoriasis- and I haven't had one yet that told me it didn't work for them. I hope this helps, and I wish you lots of luck!

Try an over the counter medication such as Scalpicin. STRESS CAN GO TO YOUR HEAD - LITERALLY!

It may trigger SCALP ITCH, an ailment millions of people experience. You can take comfort in the fact that you are not alone - some 43% of the population, both men and women of all ages, suffered from at least one scalp stress symptom in the past 12 months. Whether it's flaking, burning, itching or another scalp discomfort, scalp problems are more common than you think.

Scalpicin® Anti-Itch Liquid "Hypoallergenic Formula" and new Maximum Strength Scalpicin® Anti-Itch Liquid "Dermatology Formula" are the remedies for certain types of scalp itch. They are not shampoos, but rather medicated, leave-in treatments that do not contain coal-tar. This makes them safe and convenient, allowing them to be applied any time or place that scalp itch becomes bothersome. Plus, neither will interfere with your hairstyle. The Scalpicin product you choose depends on the severity of your scalp itch.

Contains the active ingredient hydrocortisone (1.0%) to control the intense itching associated with minor skin irritation and rashes due to seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis.

I use Jason Biotin Shampoo and conditioner. I had a really bad case of dandruff a few months ago and none of the traditional solutions worked (head and shoulders, tar shampoo, etc) Jason shampoos don't have sodium laureth sulfate, which is usually put in shampoos because it gets nice and sudsy, but it's also very abrasive to skin and scalp - it took about a week or 2, but my scalp has been wonderful since then. Also take it easy on products you put in your hair such as hairspray or mousse.

People never believe me when I tell them, but here it goes.

I used to have the same problem. I found out that I was causing the problem by not allowing my scalp to dry thoroughly before putting it up in a ponytail. A warm, wet scalp and tight hairstyle are perfect conditions for fungus to thrive. My hair is thick so I have to be especially careful.

One day my aunt told me to put Listerine on my scalp after I shampoo it. Yes, mouthwash. Listering kills the fungus that causes severe dandruff. The original formula, not that flavored stuff.

I bought an empty spray bottle from Target and poured Listerine in it. I washed my hair like I normally would and rinsed it, then I towel dried it and started spraying Listerine directly on my scalp. Then I put a plastic cap over my hair and waited 10 minutes and rinsed it out with warm water. I left my hair down and let it dry naturally, then I used a blow dryer on low and dried my scalp. You may have to repeat this in a day or two.
I have been dandruff free for years! It will try to come back when I find myself wearing those wet ponytails all the time. But Listerine will take it right out.

Try it and you won't be disappointed!

If you have tried all of the dandruff type shampoos and they're not working, what you may have is exzema or psorasis (that's what I have). You say you can't afford a demotologist, but keep in mind that once they diagnose the problem, they'll prescribe shampoo that really works, plus scalp treatments that you use until it's under control. Then it's just a matter of maintenance, like using the products about 2-3x a week.
It's really worth the effort.

I hear you loud and clear; I have the same problem. I've had this problem for many years. I have the answer to your problem. You probably have a skin condition called eczema. I have listed mine as psoriasis of the scalp as mine seems to get worse when I'm under more stress. My best advice is go to your doctor see if they can prescribe anything. I don't wash my hair everyday...I brush it vigorously for scalp stimulation 2-3 times a day. Oils are good for it, if you can stand it. If you wash your hair too much you are stripping your scalp of those oils that help calm down the scalp's condition. I have enclosed a link to help you out further. I use Denorex Shampoo with menthol. It feels so good and it hellps keep it under control. Don't use Head & Shoulders, its too acidic and makes it worse for me.

Here's why there's dandruff: Your skin sheds cells all the time, but hair holds it in. If you shave youir head, the skin cells on yhour scalp will shed easier. You don't notice dandruff on your skin where it's hairless, do you? Some people have a worse problem with dandruff because they are allergic to the microscopic skin mites that are on ALL of us. Getting rid of the hair will make it better. And it will be so convenient and you'll look stunning!
