I have Windows XP OS.For the past few days I have been having trouble opening or working with windows applications(the internet explorer for instance) immediately after boot up. After I double click on the required icon the window of the application opens only after some 20 minutes.Until that time there is no response from the system for either mouse click or any keyboard operation and I get the message that the program is 'NOT RESPONDING'.But once any application starts functioning properly(i.e after 20 minutes) the rest of the session does not give any problem.

(I have a P4 processor and 512 MB RAM if that helps)

It sounds like you need to do some serious housecleaning. Is your hard drive completely full? If so, delete some files to make sure you have at least ~15-20% free space. Also, defragmentation helps. Check for visues and spyware - they can eat up critical system resources as well.

It also may be time to back up your files and reformat your hard drive and re-install Windows. You need to do that about once a year if you use your computer a lot. Windows constantly accumulates problems that never really go away - sooner or later they catch up with you.

Id do scans for Spyware and Viruses. Also, defrag and scandisk. Also, shut off everything you don't want to start. Run>Msconfig>Startup tab. Turn everything off except explorer, if its there, and your firewall. Then restart.
