He was upset with a fellow artist who was his roommate for awhile. The guy moved on and pretty much told Vincent that he had simply been using him as a stopping off place on his way to bigger and better things. And yes, he was mentally unstable as well.....

Some history books claimed that he was crazy and cut his ear lobe to show his love for his fiance. But years back a doctor read some of Gogh's old letters that he wrote to his brother descibing the pain he had in his ear. The doctor think that Van Gogh may have had a bad ear infection that was so painful that he cut the part of the ear that was hurting.

The first two answers but "ME" and 'Betty' are both myths that need to die already. Vincent suffered from an undiagnosed medical condition akin to epilepsy. The absinthe he was drinking did not help his situation at all. The ear was attacked (just the lobe was lopped,by the way) because of the ringing in his ears due to the medical condition. That night he had a row with his painting friend, Paul Gaugin, had some absinthe, and was suffering from an attack of the disease. All these things combined made him a little crazy.

Van Gogh was probably bipolar and in a fit of rage and frustration, he cut off the lower lobe of his ear. He had been drinking earlier in the evening, and had quarreled with Paul Gaugin over something trivial.

I'd always heard that he had cut it off to send to someone, but when you asked this question, I couldn't find that reference.

As it is, there are a number of theories of why he did it ranging from an anxiety attack, epilepsy, an attempt at self-performed surgery to relieve the Ménière's symptom of tinnitis, delusion from drinking Absinthe, etc.

He was suffering from mental illness and it is speculated he cut off his ear to stop the voices. Very sad.
