Two or three times a year I have to take a few ays off work because I'm so mentally tired - I just can't think straight and do very absent-minded things. I feel guilty - because I'm not actually ill - just incapable of functioning properly. After a couple of days - I'm back on form. I always put this down to my body fighting a virus (and my body usually wins!) but it knocks the stuffing out of me in the process. I rarely if ever have any colds, sore throats etc. Does this sound feasible? Any doctors out there?

I suppose depending on the stress of your occupation a few days off to mentally/physically relax might be just the thing you need. However, be aware of your routine: are you sleeping/resting enough? (8 hr. or more), are you eating healthy foods? drinking enough water? taking a multivitamin? are you doing moderate exercise (fights depression)? are you socializing (fights depression) and do you have interests outside of work? I don't think you're feeling any different than most people who work full time. I would recommend that you "leave your work at work" and modify and balance your lifestyle to your advantage incorporating activities that relax you physically and mentally, or pursue new ones. I would also say if you do get a cold, do everyone else a favor and stay home! Otherwise, you're just having a normal reaction to the stress you're feeling at work. Moderation and balance could be your best friend. Godloveya.

I've heard of someone who has a condition sounding very like yours. I just can't remember the name of it. He doesn't just have days off though, he has to take months off at a time. It sounds as though you are doing what you must to keep working and personally, I think you are brilliant.
Make sure you take all the holiday leave you are entitled to and make sure you use that time to give your body the rest it obviously needs.
It may also be a good idea to go and get a full check up at the docs. You might find it's something as simple as a new diet that you need.
Good Luck.

You know what usually I do NOT call in when sick - I call in when I'm Sick&Tired!! There's nothing wrong with what you are doing, we all get burnt out eventually. (I think of my work week as one VERY LONG DAY that starts on Monday at 6am when I leave my house and ends at 6:30pm on Friday when I get home.) So call in sick if you have to, just plan your days accordingly so you get paid and have enough to last the full year!! Paid time off rules!

If you get that tired, it's your body's way of telling you to slow down or you'll burn yourself out. Take time to chill out properly, get plenty of sleep and try to cut down the amount of stress you're under - don't take on more than you have time or energy for. Drinking plenty of water and cutting down on coffee and other stimulants will help too.
