My boyfriend and I want to take our relationship to the next level. We love each other very much and we want to make love. This is the first time for the both of us and while we are very knowledgeable about sex.... we just want to be completely safe. What condoms are best and do spermicide ones really work? And when engaging in oral, how can both of us be safe? I want protection too....

I recommend going to either your gynecologist or your local free clinic and speak with them. Remember that all is kept confidential (yes, even from your parents) because the visit deals with YOUR body! When you make this visit, explain to them that you and your boyfriend want to make love, but want to be completely safe. The person you speak with will most likely explain about STDs or STIs (I have heard both, but STIs I believe is the more recent term), Protection methods and may even bring up Birth Control. They will probably give you pamphlets and maybe even condoms. After your visit, be sure to speak with your boyfriend about what you told (some clinics are female only which means that behind a closed door you will speak to another woman (I was relieved to find this) so your boyfriend may go with you, but may have to sit in the waiting room) and then you two will be ready to make a mature and informed decision.

Also, I recommend that you both communicate with each other and even though I do not know who it feels for men for their first times, ask you boyfriend to stop if you say "ouch" or appear in pain.

Good luck and good job on wanting to be informed and protected! Even though I do not know how old you are this is a very MATURE of you to look at the different angles before heading for the sheets!

First get to Planned Parenthood and get both of you tested for every disease imaginable, just as a precaution.

Then get on the pill.

Latex condoms are the safest and yes spermicide works.

For oral, if you really want to be safe he should use a condom and you should use a dam.

Ask the Dr or Nurse at PP about all your concerns. They have all the information you will ever need to know.

Good luck and I hope your first time is nice and each time gets better and better!!!!

The best condoms you can get are usually the medium expensive ones. The ones with spermicide can help but it's not 100%.

For oral sex you might want to consider flavor condom for him and depending on if you're prone to yeast infections or not, have a flavored one for yourself as well, if not, stick with a unlubricated condom.

Enjoy and have some fun!

The only 100 percent "safe" form of birth control / disease protection is abstinence. But, condoms are a must but some times they break. If you are thinking of becoming sexually active, you need to get on the pill and still use condoms.
