The main reason is to keep the driver away from the wall. By running counter-clockwise, the driver is on the inside of the race track.

The late Smokey Yunick was asked this question in a magazine column a number or years ago, and he wasn't sure. He surmised that during the early days of Auto Racing, cars were utilizing Horse Tracks as make-shift Auto Tracks, who were running 'their' races counter-clock wise, that the car promoters also followed suit. But the Road Courses are run in the 'clockwise' direction, European connection? Next Question: How come the Horse Races are run in a 'counter-clockwise' direction? Is it because Horses automatically turn left?

Oval racing has been going left since before NASCAR was around. Indianapolis Motor Speedway has always run their oval counter-clockwise and has been in use since 1909. This predates NASCAR. One reason for NASCAR to do so though, is that it's easier to position a left-hand drive car through a left turn than it is through a right hander.

Because the races are all held North of the Equator. If the races were held in South America, they'd driver clockwise.
