I put polyurethane on wood tables that are black with gold Egyptian writing and polyurethane is peeling off. How can I remove the polyurethane completely?

you must either sand it off, or scrape it off with a tool called a cabinet scraper. You might be able to remove it with paint stripper, but you would risk serious damage to the underlying wood surface.

i dunno about getting the poly off without damaging the egyptian writing and the black, however, you could use fine steel wool, and feather the chipping poly down to the piant, then you could take "wipe on poly" sold in the stain aisle and re-poly the tables, it should work out pretty good, i did this on my coffee table, and it worked out very well. just be sure to feather in the chipped areas and in doing so not to damage the underlying paint. Wipe on polyurethane is very simple to use, you just wipe it on with a rag, and it self levels itself. several coats would work very well.
