I saw a used truck that looks pristene but has a lot of miles and don't know if I should buy it. Its an s10 and I would hope to go far enough that I could save up and put in a new engine in. Of course I don't know how much a new engine cost or where to get one.

It depends on how it was driven. 100,000 miles of highway driving across country is a lot less damaging then 100,000 of city driving, say like a taxi of delivery.

Also, the engine isn't the only problem. On cars with over 100,000 miles, you can expect little problems in suspension, electrical, fuel system, etc. to creep up constantly, sometimes costing more than the cost of a car payment every month. There are also problems such as Transmission, differential, gearbox, etc that can cost $1,000s to fix if they break.

A used car can sometimes be a bargain, or a nightmare, and there's no easy way to tell which your's will be. If you can get a mechanic to look it over before you buy, that may save you some headaches.

Good Luck

It's not worth it. Because if you add up the amount of money that you'd end up putting in a new engine, plus the amount of money that you'd be spending on the truck to buy it, you'd probably be able to get a pretty good truck. Plus the engine isn't the only thing you should be worrying about with a truck with alot of miles, alot of other things will start going bad also.

Just because the truck is prettied up, doesn't mean that things aren't going bad with it, it's amazing what some armor-all will do.

If you're looking for a decent set of wheels, check out http://www.craigslist.com on the right hand side, pick your state, then your city... then under the for sale section, find autos or whatever... i just got a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee, great condition for like $4900 bucks off that site.

Well one way to look at it is if the previous owner took the time to maintain the appearence of the vehicle he probably took the time to maintain the mechanicals. I have seen S10 trucks with 200K on them. The bottom line in all of it is value. If the truck is 3000.00 and you can drive it for 2 - 3 years that is an exceptional value considering what the average car payment is currently
