My father died, was in five hospitals and the invoices are flying in. He was supposed to be on Medicare, then BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD for a secondary provider. How does this work?

You need to call the people who have sent you the bills and give them the Medicare and BCBS ID numbers for your dad. They'll take care of this for you. After they bill Medicare, Medicare will send the balance to BCBS. You shouldn't have to do anything else, unless the provider is not registered with Medicare (which is unlikely).
I'm sorry for your loss. Good luck.

Medicare will pay 80% of the medical expenses after the deductible has been met. Then it depends on what type of plan he had with BCBS. You can request itemized statements form all of his providers, and these will show what has been billed out, what and who has paid on the claims, and what is still waiting for payment, from the insurance or from the patient. If you are still confused then go the these places and ask to see a biller. My condolences to you and your family.
