We don't like to open up to women because women have a tendency to talk to other people, word of mouth it could crush a mans ego. My girlfriend has tried on numerous occasions to get me to open up. I just can't, it feels wrong. I can tell her I love her, but I can't explain why. I know I just do.
Or get him really hammered one night sit him down and ask him how he feels. It works when I am drinking with my mates at the local pup.

You shouldn't have to try. If he wants to he will. If he simply refuses to then you have to respect that or look elsewhere.
Listening is a good way forward though. You have to build trust and rapport by the bucketload. Then wait..
