There are a variety of Religious Studies books that can help you find those answers. "Religions of the World" was one I read in class last year when I took my Living Religions class.

Or Daniels Prophecy
Either of these would be a good place to start but the first publication gets into the different religions.

I am an athiest hindu, born, raised and living in India.

IF you ask me, relegion is just a set of concepts on how one's "ways of life" affect what happens after one's death.

Hinduism is not about God, Heaven or Hell. It is still one of the purest and retains the primitive basic concept intact. There is a chance that Hindusim is the oldest relegion as well. Hinduism differes from all otehr relegions on two grounds

(1) The relegion totally ignores the role of "others" and concenterates on the individual. There is no meaning in mass worship or collective efforts of worship
(2) There are no middle-men between a person and the divine. Hindu priests are mere labourers who may carry out the tasks of rituals associated with ones choice of worship and as such is not a representative or agent of God

The "Sourcebook of the World's Religions" is a very good place to start.

http://www.amazon.com/Sourcebook-Worlds-Religions-Interfaith-Spirituality/dp/1577311213/sr=8-1/qid=1164044975/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7900236-9684951?ie=UTF8&s=books

Though for a timeline you'll have to go elsewhere.

I'll sum up the differences...

Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism are on one side of the spectrum. Ideally these people are close to God at all times.

On the other side is Buddhism, Taoism, Tantra. They're methods & ways of life. And they don't tell you about reaity, they show it to you.
