Hi I had lost 50 lbs after having my daughter and now I have gained back 15 lbs and I dont want to gain it all back. I am still very overweight and need to lose about 75lbs. It wasnt very hard after my daughter was born I was busy taking care of her and didnt have time to think let alone binge on fatty foods. Now my daughter is 17m/o and is more independent so I have more down time. I feel awful and am tired all the time along with back and knee pain from the extra weight. I am an emotional eater and eat when depressed, happy, sad etc. I want to look and feel good again. I want to be healthy and be around for my daughter. Any good advice or what keeps you motivated? What are some diet and fitness basics?

I work at a gym and try to counsel a lot of the ladies that come there. Here is the advice that i give to many of them who like to binge on fatty foods and eat when depressed. Stop buying those fatty foods. Stop tempting yourself. If it isn't there, you can't eat it. (Clean out your kitchen and pantry --excuse to exercise- lift all those cans and garbage outside!) I tell them that they should shoot for only eating foods that they have to prepare themselves. To actually cook. This might stop you from wanting a snack if you actually have to make it. Have apples and fruits around instead of snacks. Have yogurt around. when eating fruits, cut them up and slow yourself down. PORTION is very important. If you are going to eat something fatty, MEASURE it out. if you have a whole bag of chips there you will eat till you are overfull. Measure it out so you only binge a little. Cravings go away after 15-20 mins. DRINK A LOT OF WATER. Get a picture out of your target weight loss. Look at it and know that you can achieve it. You're in a funk right now but only you can get yourself out of it. Be healthy. just look at your daughter and see all the motivation you need. From what you wrote, you already know what you want to do. Now go and do it. Good Luck!!!

if people would exercise more they would not have to worry so darn much about food...Are you really serious about doing this? We are talking about hard work. Putting down your little debbies, getting off your butt and not only going on a diet but EXERCISING!!! Even if you lose the weight it will come right back if you do not have the desire and motivation to not only look cute but to be healthy. it is going to take alot of inner strength I can assure you of that.

1.) eat 4-5 small meals a day

2.) drink lots of water

3.)exercise every day

4.) do not eat 4-6 hours before you sleep.

What worked for me is keeping a log of what I eat.

I found a program I could use with my Palm Pilot and entered EVERY thing I ate as well as any exercise I did. The program calculates calories, fat, carbs, protien....everything.

It really helped me get a handle on how much fuel I was putting into my body as well as burning.

As far as diet, a modified heart healthy/diabetic diet works for me in terms of weight loss. Upping fruits and veggies - eating LEAN protien and keeping track of the calories in the drinks I have (as well as serving sizes - our wine glasses are huge and are really 2.5 servings which is a big calorie hit) is imperative.

It sounds like you have been doing great with the initial weight loss. Good luck.

I think the name of the PDA program I use is pocket diet tracker - but there are lots of similar programs. The neat thing about the programs is there are extensive pre-programed restaurant and grocery story pre-prepared foods nutritional values lists you can import into the program.

I saw a TV special last night called "we lost 800 lbs." and you can Google that title and get alot of good information on the struggle that two women had losing 400 lbs. each. It's sad and triumphant at the same time. I had bypass surgery and lost 110 lbs. Prior to that (when I could walk without a cane) I had lost 85lbs. dieting and walking 4 miles a day. Gained most of it back. I know it's hard for you. Feel free to write if you want to share more information : dearbobbye@yahoo.com
