It could be a line of could be the truth. I have used it many times out of honesty....most of the time she was a friend of a friend or used to work somewhere I knew.
Depending on your personality, a great comeback would be "Yeah, we had sex a few months ago and you never called me back!" The reaction should be priceless.

Usually it is a pickup line or an ice breaker. Say to him, "Yeah, I was in drug rehab with you, remember?"
