I took my daughter to the orthodontist b/c i was referred by her dentist. He said she needs braces. Everyone else is telling me 9 years old is way too young. Should I get a 2nd opinion?

She may have something going on that requires some early intervention. Two-phase treatment is used frequently to correct major issues early. She would have brackets on a few teeth and possibly some other type of appliance, like a palatal expander, for 9-12 months. She would wear retainers for some time time afterward. The second phase would begin when all of the permanant teeth are in and it would typically take 18-24 months, with retention afterward also.

Not everyone who goes through early treatment has to have braces later.

A second opinion never hurts. You could also ask her orthodontist if this early treatment is absolutely necessary, or if everything can be addressed when all of her permanet teeth are in.

No 8 years old you can get braces over in ireland (it should be the same over in the US ) And i would thing it is too much for a child to take some much pain from her teeth . Her roots of her teeth will hurth her for the next 3-5 day when she gets them . And i'm 16 and i went throught alot of pain with my teeth you will not be able to eat anything (in ways lol ) And i would think at the age of 9 its too much PAIN for a young girl . And i would had brace(s) on the bottom

If I were you I would follow the doctors recommendations. The braces might help pull your daughters jaw into an alignment that will help her teeth come in straighter. If you are really worried you might visit another orthodontist just to get a second opinion.

But if it were me, I would most likely go for the braces.

Nine is a perfect age to go to the orthodontist. Don't listen to people that do not take their kids to the orthodontist. There's a lot of misinformation going around about orthodontic treatment. Your daughter will have all her dental problems taken care of before her friends have even started with their dental problems. You don't need a second opinion.

I was 12 but I started all my dental work at 7. So I would go with the orthodontist. Its not so much about when they are put on as when they are taken off. If they come off to early then you run the risk of the teeth moving. If she has most of her adult teeth there shouldn't be big problame.

no that is prefectly normla the orthodontists will do whats best. but fyi you may want to check with another orthodontist and if her teeth are not that abd tell him you want to wait.....
reason: i have had lots of friends that go threw stage 1 and thne stage 2 of braces it alot more trouble and alot more money its like getting braces twice b/c the ortho. puts them on too early and then once he takes them off her adult teeth will grow in and screw up which leads to another set of braces.
they only do this because it makes them more money but not for you. so check with another ortho. or better off jsut tell him you want to wait a little while until ALL her adult teeth are in if there not already. good luck.

if she needs them then you need to get them don't worry about what others say. so if you want your daughter/ son to grow looking like a bunny don't get them
