She doesn't know I want one yet, but we are going on a 5 hour car ride Wednesday. How should I bring it up?

Well, if you have your own money to buy it, I wouldn't think it should be a problem. Just tell your mom you would like to use your money to buy one so you have something to do on your long car ride and that you will use it other times too.

Your mom is not dumb. Remember that. I learned this lesson after many stupid purchases I made when I was younger.

You are probably pretty young; you have a decent amount of money saved up, so you figure you want a dvd player. I understand.

I am 27 right now, I am not some old fart trying to tell you what to do.

This is my advice as I look back and know now what I wish I would have done then.

INVEST THE MONEY - do not spend. Depending on how much money you have it will determine what your options are. Go to your bank and talk someone there about some options you have.

A cool dvd player might seem great now, but in a few years dvds might not even be around anymore. Then you'll kick yourself in the A$$.

I made many decisions the opposite way though and bought the stuff, and I am fine today. I just might be driving a nicer car now is all :-).

If you want to get your mom to let you have one regardless of what I just said then find one CHEAP on ebay (from a good seller of course) and tell your mom it will help you with your school work. Tell her you will get some learning materials on DVD to watch along with your movies. This might persuade her a little more. Just remember not to get annoying about it.

Ask her about a movie you both saw and liked and mention how you'd like to see it on an upcoming trip. The idea of the portable DVD player is that you can watch a movie outside your home. You can also mention that it could be a great tool for when going on family road trips for everyone to use as well. As for pricing, there are many supermarkets that have them real cheap, the higher the price the more bells and whistles that will be thrown in. So there isn't a real issue on price if you have a regular one already.

the 5 hour car ride might be more fun playing word games with the family
or
you could say Mom Dad, If you don't want me to ask every 5 minutes. "When are we going to be there" buy me a DVD player so i don't bug you all the time.
But that would be black mail and not very nice
try counting all the blue VW you see. the time will pass quickly

Start the conversation by talking about movies, then make a suggestion that your mom buy you your own portable dvd player

If you buy it with your own money I don't see any problem at all. She might not want you watching movies the whole 5 hours, but she shouldn't mind you bringing it along to pass some time.

In your question, it sounds like your buying it with your own money. I would just sneak to the store and buy it. If she asked you where you got it, just say you bought it with your own money. I plan on doing the same thing with the wii and ps3 console. Im just going to go ahead and buy it with my money. After all its my money and I worked hard to earn that money. Best of luck to you.

if you want to buy it with your own money, you know what I say go to the store one day and buy it and say mom I bought it with my own money and that is that. I don't think she will be upset it's one less thing in life she will have to buy you.

Well it depends how old you are. If you have enough money for it you might get away with it , But if your wanting your mom to buy your screwed.
