I have a bad potty mouth, and I have two girls, ages 4 and 5. They don't dare say any swears because I make them know I am seriouse about talking that way. I highly suggest you make it known to him now that it is wrong, and put him in time out right away. He will learn not to say it, or he ca sit in timeout a long time. You need to be seriouse about it though. I bet at first you laughed. (i would have) He thinks it is cute. good luck

I have heard of people putting vineagar in childrens mouths for saying such words...whether it's booty or whatever. I don't agree with soap or hot sauces...but I guess vineagar isn't too bad. It's not harmfull...just nasty to most children. This would be negative feedback.
Positive feeback, tell him that every day that he has a good day and doesn't use bad words then give him a star. On an average week if he gets 5 stars, then give him choices for special play. Pillow fights, a few extra minutes of a story at night, few extra minutes of tv or whatever routine you use to put him to bed at night.

Ignore it. I hope he is not picking it up from you or his father. I would also praise him when he describes people in a good way. You can set the example. "That lady in front of us has pretty eyes" Once you set the example of how to properly comment on people, he will get the hint. But I would ignore the whole "booty" thing.

With my 2 boys I always took them aside and explained that the word was a very nasty thing to say. Then gave them an example of how the word could be used against them and asked how they would feel about that. Then I would drop it. If it is ignored the fun part of shocking you and your husband is over. The shock factor is big with kids that age. Good luck!

Every time he says it do a time out. 4 year olds hate time out. Also remind him during the day (especially when he is having fun) that he is not in time out because he is being good.
Talk to him about using bad words, how it makes people feel bad. People underestimate the cognitive powers of a 4 year old.

yes, swear jars work if he is making an allowance.
dont' react like, oh my gosh! when he says it. just say something like we don't use that language. let him know you are dissappointed. make a prize jar with like snacks or cheap toys and when he does something needing to be discipled for take one thing out of the jar and let him see that it is one thing less he will get to take out at the end of the day or week. finally, my parents used soap. terrible! but, it worked.

Young children thrive on attention--good or bad attention. You are giving him attention with your negative response to his behavior. You probably yell, "Don't say that!" or something like that. Try being more subtile and not reacting so obviously.
Save big reactions for GOOD behavior that you want him to repeat.
