we're going skiing this winter and I'm wondering about using our bike helmets instead of having to buy specific skiing helmets. I don't really care about being areodynamic, my concern is safety rather than speed. do bike helmets protect your head in a different way than ski helmets should?

Ski helmets are designed to keep your ears warm, that is one factor.

Ski helmets also provide a greater protective area, as well as are designed to hold goggles. A bike helmet won't hold goggles at all.

Other than that....I usually don't worry about style too much...but I have never seen a bike helmet on the slopes. I'm sure it would earn a chuckle or two.

If you are only going skiing once, and want head protection, go ahead with the bike helmets, and a hat or beanie underneath it.

I think that it would be worth the money (I know they're expensive) to buy ski helmets. They are much more protective than bicycle helmets, they are more insulated, and they are designed to incorporate ski goggles. If you use a bike helmet, you will have to wear some kind of hat under it, and the helmet itself will feel awkward. A bike helmet is better than nothing but I'd go ahead and buy a ski specific helmet if I were you.

Keep in mind that a bike helmet is designed to keep you cool. So, it could be very cold using one of those. As far as safety is concerned ski and bike helmets offer similar protection however they are rated by different safety organizations and are not "Officially" safe for anything other than their intended purpose.

Many resorts rent helmets these days so that may be an option.

The risk of any injury on the piste is low, and the risk of a head injury very low.

Of course, if you wear a helmet, you can ski as fast as you like and however hard you might fall, there is no danger of breaking an arm, a leg, or your neck..............

A light weight camera solves that issue. Mine mounts right on front, but I made my own mount out of a zip-tie and Velcro.
