I'm moving from the UK to Canada in a year or 2 and would like tips or advice on what to bring. I know that it is pointless bringing electricals but what about furniture and other houshold stuff or would the cost just be prohibitive?

I've moved both ways, US to UK and back. I originally shipped my stuff the first time, but left it the second. I would suggest leaving the furniture as its just as cheap to buy it over here. You can go to places like Rooms To Go and buy a whole houseful reasonably. Also, most everything in Canada and the US are cheaper than the UK so your best bet is to just buy it over here. Ref your personal items, you are allowed to carry 2 bags on British Airways weighing 32 kilos (70 lbs) (some other carriers only allow you 23kilos) and it only cost me 75GBP to bring extra bags which is cheaper than having it shipped. I would pack all my personal items in as many bags as you want and just bring them with you. I had 9 bags, all packed full and had no problems with BA. We flew out of Gatwick and BA has an early check in proceedure. We stayed at the Sofitel hotel and checked our bags in the night before and Sofitel only charges 10GBP to wheel my luggage to the check in gate, plus because we had so much luggage (and spent about 350GBP on it) they upgraded us. When we landed, we just got an airport worker to help us with it all,

its really pointless, the shipping costs would be extortionate and you would spend more money shipping it over then just buying new stuff in canada. If you have a garage sale you can even make some money on electricals/furniture. My advice is travel as light as possible and only bring essentials..i have moved country 4 or 5 times and always regret bringing the sweater i never wore or the blender i never used
