is there a simple process that you can make ethanol with in the classroom or does it have to be made in a still?

You get Ethanol through fermentation, so, just set anything that was once living in a sealed contained (open enough to let air in but not bugs) and in a few months you got ethanol. My mother taught me to take the leftovers from a pineapple put that in a jar with a cup of sugar and then fill with water, then in a month or two you can get drunk.

Ethanol is made by yeast in the rising of bread. You can smell it. It is baked off.
Ethanol is made by yeast in the fermentation of fruit juice.

The still is used to separate the alcohol from the watery liquid, because yeast can only make up to 12- 18% alcohol. Above that % is distilled.

I don't think you should be making ethanol in class. it could be construed as teaching kids how to make their own booze! Believe me, some will too!
That's just my opinion!
To make it, you have to have a still. Unless you make a wine!
