Is there such thing as a free psycologist for people who can't afford one who really need help? If so, where can I get information about it?

Most states have a Department of Human Services. Put it in a search engine and the name of your state

Depending on where you're living, there are often either county clinics or hospital clinics that offer free counselling-or counselling offered on a sliding scale, based on how much money you have.

Your family doctor would be a good starting resource, as well as your province or state's psychology association board. I typed "(Province name) psychologists association" and was brought to their homepage, where they do indeed have a referral service.

You can also go to the Yellow Pages and look under "Psychologists" or "Counselling" and see if you can find ads for free or low-cost clinics. You can also phone clinics to see what their rate scale is and if they are too high, some will tell you who is taking patients for free or for lower cost.

If you are working, your company may have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The counsellors and psychologists through that program usually work for free, as part of the money that is taken off your pay cheque in deductions goes to supply the service. Talk to your Human Resources personnel to find out if you have this service at your workplace.

Good luck!

Practically every town has a local mental health clinic filled with therapists to help you with your problems. They work with people who cannot afford a high priced psychiatrist. They offer grants to you for the therapy and the medications. That's where I go.

I depends on where you live. If you are in the US look up mental health in the Government pages of your phone book. They will treat you for free or cheap depending on your income. But don't expect award winning Doctors, you get what you pay for. Good Luck!

Please call your county mental health office - every county has one. They charge people based upon their ability to pay although they are not required to see you as a patient if they do not regard your problem as serious enough which is a subjective opinion which may only be made (in my opinion) after you have been evaluated.

There are 1-800 numbers or crisis lines available in certain communities. This are often staffed with trained counselors who can provide immediate help.
