I need to know because I am writing a novel and I want it to sound good as well as be interesting.

When was the last time you knew everything was as it should be.
What time did you discover it?
How did they get in?
How did they leave?
What did they take? Do you have serial numbers?
Any weapons or money taken?
Seen any strange people in neighborhood or hanging around?
Had any run ins with anyone?
Know of anyone who would have done this?
You also look around the scene and take note of point of entry and exit and method of entry and exit. Was door kicked, pryed, hit? Window busted? Look to see if it was busted in or out as some people stage a burglary and make the mistake of knocking the window from the inside out. You make note of what was taken to determine if it looks like professionals or just crackheads broke in. You have to determine the time as much as you can so you can ask neighbors etc.
