It will be just fine on the counter. You want to cover it. Walmart has a Rubbermaid (plastic) cake saver you can get. That will help save the frosting. It also comes in handy for anything you don't want plastic wrap to touch and it's air tight. Good Luck.

Cover it in an airtight container so that it doesn't dry out. Cake never needs to go in the fridge unless it is cheesecake.

The fridge will make the cake too dry, it is better in a tin or cupboard.
