It's going to take some work. If you want your abs to show, you have to get your body fat below 10%, and that means proper diet and exercise. Check out the Mens Health website (http://www.menshealth.com/), click on the "Discussions" link, set yourself up with a username and password (it's free), then go on to the Discussion boards. They have boards devoted to diet, fitness, and exercise. For your diet, do a search for "clean eating" and for your workout just search for "abs." You'll find everything you need to know about what to eat, what to avoid, calorie counting, how much carbs/protein/fat you should be eating, building muscle, and getting lean ("cutting").

Most people already have defined abs, but you just can't see them because they are covered by a little bit of fat on the torso. So, the best way to see them is to lower your body fat percentage by doing some good cardio.

Diet also plays a part. Google "The Abs Diet" or pick up the book at your local bookstore.

A low glycemic index diet will reduce the colories which hit your waist. Anaerobic exercise (weights) will also help burn this extra fat. Crunches help, but with the fat there, the abs will never be seen. There's info on low glycemic index lifestyle management available at casheltech.unfranchise.com.

Cardio is good and should be included in any regimen, however the effects of cardio burning fat are temporary. Muscle tissue will burn fat 24x7.
