PRODUCTION COST. most semi conductors or chips can be produced with a cheap method(material) or a tougher method(material). though gold or platinum is used in a micro (nano) level in chips, it is not the material cost we are talking about here. the procedure for making the chip with such a thin layer of platinum or gold, labor charge for handling and working with such a thin chip, wastage (with 5microns or less thickness most chips tend to break during production), research & patenting the method plus the huge chunk for business department (marketing + profit etc). with all this, the buyer pays $2000 for a good quality.

Well, first off, you should never have to spend anywhere near even #1000 on a CD player these days, but the reason more expcensive players sound so much better has to do with the light beams that read the disc. In a cheap CD player, it's only going to have one "reading beam" whiich of course, shines down on the pits in the disc and converts those to an electronic pulse which is then converted to sound in your player. But in a high quality player, there are THREE beams: the read beam, and then also a tracking beam on either side of it. These tracking beams keep the read beam perfectly aligned so it reads more accurately and produces better sound.
