Hahaha it's not very difficult to know if an American guy likes you. I could crack some jokes, but I'll be nice. If he pays a lot of attention to you, if he flirts with you, if he really wants to listen to what you have to say, sometimes they'll give you that "look" and you can just tell. I don't think American guys are too different than any other guys when it comes to finding out if they like you or not.

But when an American guy "likes" you it means "I want to see if I can get into your pants."
American guys -- like all men -- are only interested in getting their rocks off. So, if all you really want is sex, then there's no problem. If you want a serious relationship, don't bother. He only wants to f*** you.
